The CVDLINK project has released a new video demonstration showcasing its federated platform, which enables secure, privacy-preserving collaboration between research and healthcare institutions working on cardiovascular disease (CVDs).
The video provides an overview of how researchers can access and analyse data across multiple institutions without transferring sensitive patient information. Through a federated architecture, each participating organisation retains full control of its data, while researchers use a shared web portal to discover datasets, submit queries, and receive anonymised results.
Designed to support collaborative cardiovascular research, the CVDLINK platform brings together multiple data types across seven cardiovascular conditions, including ECG signals, medical imaging, and clinical records. Data are standardised using an extended OMOP model aligned with FAIR principles, helping to improve interoperability and facilitate cross-site analyses.
The platform also supports federated artificial intelligence (AI), enabling models to be trained locally at participating institutions while only encrypted model updates are shared. Researchers can create and customise AI workflows through an integrated pipeline builder and use explainability tools to better understand and interpret model outputs.
“One of CVDLINK’s key objectives is to enable collaborative research without compromising patient privacy,” said Otilia Bularca, from Software Imagination & Vision (SIMAVI), CVDLINK’s project coordinator. “This video demonstrates how federated technologies can help researchers access valuable insights from distributed datasets while ensuring data remain secure and under local control.”
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for an estimated 17.9 million deaths each year. By addressing barriers to data sharing and supporting the development of trustworthy AI tools, CVDLINK aims to advance research that can improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The video demonstration is now available and offers stakeholders an introduction to the platform’s key features and capabilities. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/9VR0_X6TCLc?si=qXsVXiCZf5MYV9dK
